UP Baguio Chancellor allows 27 students to graduate

BAGUIO CITY — To the cheers of students on vigil at the University of the Philippines-Baguio (UPB) lobby, UPB chancellor Raymundo Rovillos announced that the 27 students earlier denied graduation will march with their batchmates this June 25.

Rovillos’ announcement came after the 27 students of the College of Arts and Communications (CAC) appealed the decision of the UPB University Council (UC) not to extend a waiver for them for not completing the required subjects they were supposed to take under the Revised General Education Program issued in the first semester of academic year 2011 to 2012.

“The situation came about because the students used the old checklist (the pre-2011 RGEP/hybrid version), although they were provided a copy of the new checklist by the Office of the College Secretary, which also oriented the freshmen batch of 2011 about the new curriculum,” the statement stressed, adding, “It must be noted that several other students (numbering 74) of this batch of candidates for graduation from CAC did not encounter this predicament,” a press statement of the UPB said.

The UPB UC denied them the waiver which prompted them to appeal the case before UP President Alfredo Pascual last June 15.

“Please be informed that the appeal for graduation of the 27 students of the College of Arts and Communication of UP Baguio, with waiver of certain required General Education courses was approved by the Board of Regents through a referendum conducted June 23,” Memorandum No. PAEP 15-38 of the BOR informed Rovillos late yesterday, June 23, afternoon.

According to information reaching the Philippine News Agency (PNA-Baguio) the vote was eight in favor and three against.
