Man rescued after falling into 12 metre crevice in Singhampton

SINGHAMPTON, Ontario — Emergency officials say a man who was trapped overnight after falling down a 12-metre crevice near Singhampton, Ont., has been rescued.

Toronto Fire District Chief Stephan Powell said Clearview firefighters responded to a call of a man stuck at the bottom of a cavern (near 10th Concession) at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Powell says the man was conscious, breathing and in stable condition and was located about 12 metres down and six metres across from the opening of the crevice.

He says the man was wedged between two rocks for close to 14 hours.

Toronto firefighters with specialized equipment were called in to assist with the rescue, as were Barrie fire crews and the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre.

Powell says the man was successfully pulled from the cavern around 10 a.m. Sunday morning and was transported to hospital.

It was not immediately known how the man fell into the cavern.

“All we know is that he was found there, who reported it or how it was reported is still up in the air,” said Powell.

“Whether he tried to self-extricate himself and got himself stuck, whether part of this crevice caved in… There are too many unanswered questions until he can be interviewed successfully.”
