The BC New Democratic Party (NDP) has unanimously backed former cabinet minister Jennifer Whiteside as its interim leader following a major election defeat that ended nine years of NDP government in British Columbia.
The party’s incoming caucus selected Whiteside during a meeting at the provincial legislature on Thursday, October 29, five days after voters handed the Conservatives a commanding majority.
Her selection follows the resignation of outgoing Premier David Eby, who stepped down as NDP leader after his decision to call an early election resulted in the party losing its majority.
According to preliminary results from Elections BC, the Conservatives are leading in 63 of the province’s 93 electoral districts, while the NDP holds leads in 28 and the BC Greens in two. The NDP entered the election with 47 seats.
Whiteside, who was re-elected in New Westminster-Coquitlam, said she had not expected to be chosen for the interim role.
“I have to tell you, this is deeply, deeply humbling,” she told reporters after the caucus meeting.
The former labour minister acknowledged the election result and said the party must now focus on representing British Columbians from the opposition benches.
“They have asked that we sit as the official Opposition,” Whiteside said, pledging to approach the responsibility with determination and a focus on the needs of residents.
From government to opposition
The NDP’s defeat in the October 24 election marks a major shift in British Columbia politics.
Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson is expected to become the province’s next premier, replacing Eby and ending nearly a decade of NDP leadership.
The election was called two years ahead of schedule. Eby announced his resignation as party leader on election night, taking responsibility for the result.
The outgoing premier did not attend the incoming caucus meeting on October 29.
Before the meeting, former attorney general Niki Sharma said Eby had apologized to colleagues during an earlier gathering.
Sharma acknowledged that calling the early election had been a mistake, while emphasizing the need for the party to move forward.
Former forests minister Ravi Parmar similarly accepted that the party had misjudged the decision to seek an early mandate.
The NDP must now adjust to a smaller caucus and prepare to hold the incoming Conservative government accountable.
Who is Jennifer Whiteside?
Whiteside has represented the New Westminster area in the provincial legislature since 2020.
Before entering provincial politics, she worked in the labour movement, including serving as chief spokesperson and lead negotiator for the Hospital Employees’ Union.
She later held several cabinet portfolios under the NDP government, including education and child care, mental health and addictions, and labour.
Her experience in government and labour advocacy will now inform her role as the party prepares for its transition to opposition.
The caucus also selected veteran MLA Mike Farnworth as house leader and Niki Sharma as caucus chair.
Farnworth will help coordinate the NDP’s legislative work, while Sharma will oversee caucus responsibilities.
BC NDP prepares for leadership transition
Although Whiteside has received unanimous support from NDP legislators, the party’s constitution requires its Provincial Council to formally elect an interim leader after considering the caucus recommendation.
The council’s final decision has not been independently confirmed.
Whiteside is expected to guide the party through its transition while the BC NDP prepares to choose a permanent leader.
Under the party’s leadership rules, accepting the interim position prevents her from seeking the permanent leadership.
The party has not yet announced a date for its leadership contest.
Meanwhile, the incoming Conservative government could recall the legislature before the end of the year.
Whiteside said the NDP must be prepared to begin its opposition duties if lawmakers are called back for a sitting before Christmas.
For British Columbia’s New Democrats, her selection marks the beginning of a leadership transition following an election that dramatically changed the province’s political landscape.
