Lorne Doerkson’s political journey has taken an unexpected turn, from representing a rural British Columbia riding to preparing to lead the province after a stunning Conservative election victory.

The interim leader of the B.C. Conservatives emerged as the party’s leading figure after internal divisions weakened its ranks and several members left the caucus. His rise accelerated after former leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay stepped down in September, leaving Doerkson to guide the party into a snap provincial election.

The gamble paid off. The Conservatives secured a majority government in the October 24 vote, defeating the New Democratic Party led by outgoing Premier David Eby.

Doerkson, who represents Cariboo-Chilcotin, built much of his political profile around concerns affecting rural and northern communities, including wildfire emergencies, hospital service disruptions and the challenges facing local industries.

Before entering provincial politics, he worked as a newspaper publisher and was also a rodeo rider. He has frequently drawn on those experiences to emphasize the importance of community connections and practical leadership.

In his victory speech, Doerkson pledged to represent people across British Columbia, including communities that have felt overlooked by successive governments.

His incoming administration has promised tax relief, fewer regulatory barriers to development and measures to strengthen the provincial economy. It has also pledged to review the province’s finances and establish an expert commission focused on keeping hospital emergency rooms open and reducing wait times.

However, his government faces significant challenges. Its plans to expand resource development and repeal the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act are expected to draw scrutiny, particularly over the implications for relations with First Nations.

The election also marked a major setback for the NDP, which lost its governing position after nine years in power. Eby announced his intention to step down as party leader following the defeat.

Doerkson’s rapid ascent reflects a dramatic shift in British Columbia politics. Once a relatively low-profile legislator, he now faces the task of turning his party’s electoral victory into a governing record that delivers on its promises to communities throughout the province.
