An eight-year-old Grade 2 pupil drowned while swimming at Baseco Beach in Barangay 649, Port Area, Manila, on Monday, October 26.
Search teams recovered the boy’s body shortly before 9 p.m. along a shoreline covered with mangroves.
According to reports, the child’s mother initially believed he was at a nearby computer shop. His friends reportedly went looking for him but did not tell his mother that the boy had joined them for a swim in the sea.
Authorities reiterated that swimming at Baseco Beach has long been prohibited because of previous drowning incidents in the area.
Police Major Armando Linget, deputy station commander of Baseco Police Station, said playing and swimming in the area are strictly prohibited due to the risks involved.
The Manila Police District Homicide Section is continuing its investigation into the incident.
