Calls for justice are growing in Batangas following the killing of 22-year-old Charles Usi, a working student who supported his studies by performing music at a local bar.
Student organizations, artists’ groups, fellow musicians and local establishments have joined the appeal for accountability after Usi was shot while riding his motorcycle along the national highway in Barangay Banay-Banay II, San Jose, Batangas, on Sunday night.
Usi was reportedly heading home after a musical performance when two suspects riding a motorcycle allegedly followed and shot him at around 9 p.m. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim was taking up Bachelor of Arts in Communication at Westmead International School. Beyond his studies, he worked as a singer and musician to help support himself.
His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from people in the student and music communities, many of whom have called for authorities to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
Police initially received a report of a possible vehicular accident. Responding officers later discovered that Usi had suffered gunshot wounds. Investigators are examining available CCTV footage and pursuing leads to establish the identities of the suspects and determine the motive behind the killing.
Authorities have yet to announce an arrest as the investigation continues.
For Usi’s classmates, fellow performers and community members, the demand is clear: his death must not go unanswered, and those responsible must be held accountable.
