Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured another term in office, winning a closely contested presidential runoff against right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro and extending his decades-long political comeback.

With more than 98 percent of ballots counted, Lula received approximately 51.75 percent of valid votes, according to Brazil’s state news agency. The victory gives the 80-year-old leader an unprecedented fourth, non-consecutive term as president.

The result also marks a setback for the political camp of former president Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio’s father, whose conservative movement has remained a major force in Brazilian politics.

Lula’s victory comes amid a wider political shift across Latin America, where right-wing leaders and candidates have gained ground in recent years. His continued leadership positions Brazil, the region’s largest economy, to maintain a more independent foreign policy under U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Brazilian president has repeatedly defended his country’s sovereignty and criticized Washington’s use of tariffs and economic pressure. His reelection is expected to keep those tensions in focus, particularly as Brazil seeks to protect its trade interests and strengthen relationships with other international partners.

The campaign was not without challenges. Lula faced public concerns over living costs, crime and corruption, while his opponent appealed to voters seeking a conservative alternative.

After trailing Flávio Bolsonaro in the first round, Lula intensified his campaign, mobilizing supporters through social media and public rallies while emphasizing democratic values and the policies of his administration.

Lula’s political journey has been marked by dramatic turns. A former metalworker and labor union leader, he rose to national prominence through workers’ movements before helping establish the Workers’ Party in 1980.

He first became president in 2003 and won a second term in 2006. His political career later suffered a major setback when he was imprisoned for 580 days in connection with corruption cases. Brazil’s Supreme Court subsequently annulled his convictions, clearing the way for his return to the presidency in 2023.

His latest electoral victory reinforces his position as one of Latin America’s most influential left-wing leaders.

Lula is expected to begin his new term on January 5, 2027, facing the challenge of addressing domestic concerns while navigating an increasingly complicated international political and economic environment.
