SORSOGON CITY, Philippines — Twenty-three persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in Sorsogon City have completed their basic education through the Alternative Learning System (ALS), marking an important step in their preparation for life beyond detention.
Of the 23 graduates, 15 completed junior high school, while eight finished senior high school.
Despite the challenges of studying while in detention, the learners completed their academic requirements through a program designed for individuals who cannot attend conventional schools.
Education offers a path toward reintegration
Joefrie Barbacena Anglo of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Bicol said the learners continued their studies as part of their preparation to eventually reunite with their families and return to their communities.
The ALS program, implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd), provides an alternative pathway to basic education for out-of-school youth and adults.
For PDLs, the program offers opportunities to gain knowledge and develop skills that may help them pursue further education or employment after their release.
It also allows learners to work toward academic qualifications without having to wait until they leave detention.
BJMP strengthens learning programs in Bicol
The graduation comes as BJMP Bicol continues efforts to improve educational opportunities inside detention facilities.
Earlier this month, the regional office conducted training for jail learning facilitators and program implementers as part of the rollout of a revised ALS curriculum.
Held from October 13 to 15 in Guinobatan, Albay, the training focused on improving the delivery of basic education to PDL learners.
BJMP Bicol Regional Director Jail Senior Superintendent Jose Gemelo Taol emphasized the role of education in rehabilitation and reintegration.
The initiative is part of the bureau’s broader effort to help PDLs prepare for their eventual return to society.
A milestone beyond detention
For the 23 graduates in Sorsogon City, completing their studies represents more than receiving an academic credential.
Their achievement reflects the opportunity to continue learning despite restrictions on their freedom.
With junior high school and senior high school education completed, the graduates have taken another step toward pursuing opportunities beyond detention.
Their accomplishment also highlights the role of accessible education in rehabilitation, offering learners a chance to prepare for the next chapter of their lives.
