Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte made another in-person appearance before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, as proceedings moved forward in his case involving alleged crimes against humanity linked to the country’s anti-drug campaign.
The October 13 status conference focused on preparations for the trial, which is scheduled to begin on November 30. Discussions are expected to cover the presentation of evidence, the prosecution’s witness list, opening statements and the time needed by both the prosecution and defense to present their cases.
The conference marks another step in the court’s efforts to establish the procedures and timetable for the upcoming trial, which stems from allegations involving killings committed in the Philippines between November 2011 and March 2019.
Duterte was arrested in March 2025 and transferred to ICC custody in The Hague. Prosecutors accuse him of responsibility for crimes against humanity connected to the anti-drug campaign during his time as Davao City mayor and president. He has denied the allegations and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Earlier this month, ICC judges ruled that Duterte was fit to stand trial following an assessment by an independent panel of medical experts. The judges found that he could understand the charges and proceedings, follow the evidence and work with his lawyers in preparing his defense.
The court has also confirmed three counts of crimes against humanity against Duterte and referred the case for trial. The upcoming proceedings will examine the prosecution’s allegations and the evidence presented by both sides.
As preparations continue, the ICC must determine how the trial will proceed, including arrangements for witness testimony and the participation of the accused. The November 30 opening date remains the next major milestone in the case.
