As Alberta prepares for a wide-ranging referendum on October 19, Calgary’s nonprofit organizations are becoming part of a growing public conversation over what the province’s future could look like.

The referendum goes beyond the question of Alberta’s relationship with Canada. Voters will also be asked about issues including immigration, provincial programs, voting requirements and constitutional changes.

That broad agenda has prompted nonprofit groups to organize information campaigns aimed at helping Albertans understand the questions before casting their ballots.

One Calgary-based network, Nonprofits Vote, has been encouraging organizations across the province to take part in the referendum discussion. The group says nonprofits play an important role in delivering community services, supporting local economies and responding to the needs of residents.

The involvement of the sector reflects the potential impact of the referendum on organizations that work with communities affected by provincial policies, including immigration and access to social services.

Calgary has already seen local institutions take positions on the larger question of Alberta’s future. City council voted 14-1 in September to affirm Calgary’s place within Alberta and Canada, formally entering the debate ahead of the October vote.

At the same time, public discussions around the referendum have highlighted concerns about how complicated some of the questions may be. Community representatives have said some residents, particularly within Calgary’s multicultural communities, are still unfamiliar with the issues appearing on the ballot.

With ten questions covering issues that range from immigration to Alberta’s constitutional relationship with Canada, nonprofit organizations are now adding another voice to the effort to inform voters.

For Calgary, the referendum is becoming more than a debate over separation. It is also opening a wider discussion about how changes in provincial policy could affect the communities and organizations that provide services across Alberta.
