Conservative MP Scott Aitchison expected to resign by end of year

Conservative MP Scott Aitchison is expected to resign from Parliament by the end of 2026, according to sources cited by CBC News, adding to a series of departures from the federal Conservative caucus this year.

Aitchison represents Parry Sound–Muskoka in Ontario and was first elected federally in 2019. Before entering federal politics, he spent years in municipal government, including serving as mayor of Huntsville.

The MP also ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party in 2022, campaigning on issues including housing and the direction of the party. Pierre Poilievre ultimately won that leadership race.

Aitchison has served in several Conservative critic roles, including on housing, and has been involved in parliamentary discussions on housing supply and development.

His expected departure comes after other Conservative MPs announced plans to leave Parliament. Cathay Wagantall formally resigned her Saskatchewan seat in September, while Ontario Conservative MP Larry Brock also announced his intention to leave Parliament.

Aitchison has not publicly confirmed the reason for his expected resignation, according to the reporting available so far. His departure would trigger a vacancy in Parry Sound–Muskoka and eventually require a federal by-election.

The expected resignation comes as the Conservative Party prepares for the fall parliamentary sitting, with housing, the economy and the government’s policy agenda among the issues facing MPs.
