Impeachment trial to resume Oct. 1 after Sept. 30 session cancelled

The Senate Impeachment Court has cancelled its scheduled hearing on September 30, moving the next session of Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial to October 1.

The cancellation comes after the court completed another day of proceedings on the case, which has been ongoing since July.

The trial recently entered a new phase following the court’s decision on the conviction voting threshold, ruling that the required two thirds would be based on senator judges who remain legally and factually capable of participating in the proceedings.

The ruling was opposed by members of the Senate minority, who argued that the Constitution requires two thirds of all members of the Senate to convict an impeachable official. The defense has also indicated that it may pursue further legal remedies over the decision.

The court’s latest adjustment to the schedule means proceedings will now continue on October 1, with the Senate impeachment court expected to take up the remaining matters in the trial.

The impeachment case against Duterte covers allegations contained in the articles of impeachment, including unexplained wealth and alleged business interests, among other accusations. The Vice President has denied the allegations.

The trial is expected to continue as senator judges assess testimony, documents and other evidence presented by both the prosecution and defense.
