Bloc Québécois prepares for Parliament return with tariffs and Quebec election in focus

Bloc Québécois MPs are gathering near Ottawa ahead of the return of Parliament, with the Canada-U.S. trade dispute and Quebec’s provincial election expected to dominate discussions.

The Quebec sovereigntist party will hold its caucus meeting in Cantley, Quebec, less than 20 kilometres from Parliament Hill, before MPs return to the House of Commons on Monday.

The Bloc has spent much of the summer calling for greater federal support for businesses affected by U.S. tariffs, as successive rounds of duties and threats have raised concerns about the economy and cost of living.

The party is also expected to continue defending supply management, particularly for Canada’s dairy, poultry and egg sectors. Bloc-sponsored legislation restricting the federal government’s ability to make concessions on supply management in future trade agreements became law last year.

Trade tensions intensified after Canada and the United States failed to reach an agreement in August. Further tariffs and threats have since kept the issue at the centre of economic discussions, including concerns over their impact on Canadian businesses and consumers.

The Bloc is also heading into the new parliamentary session without Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay, a former Bloc MP who left federal politics to run for the Parti Québécois in Quebec’s Oct. 5 provincial election. The Bloc and PQ operate at different levels of government but both advocate for Quebec independence.

With the Quebec campaign entering its final weeks, Bloc MPs are expected to closely follow the provincial race while preparing for Parliament’s return and continued negotiations and tensions surrounding Canada-U.S. trade relations.
