President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has arrived in New Delhi, India, carrying not only the Philippines’ voice but also the priorities of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as he takes part in the 18th BRICS Summit.
As this year’s ASEAN chair, Marcos will represent the regional bloc in discussions centered on peace and security, inclusive growth and regional resilience.
The Philippines is attending the summit as an outreach country, giving Marcos an opportunity to engage with world leaders and bring ASEAN concerns into broader discussions involving developing and emerging economies.
Under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” the summit also marks 20 years since the establishment of BRICS in 2006.
Marcos is expected to join other leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during the summit’s Open Session on September 13, where he will present the priorities and gains of the Philippines’ ASEAN chairship.
On the sidelines, the President is also set to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to further strengthen ties between Manila and New Delhi, with discussions expected to cover defense, trade, health, digital cooperation, tourism, connectivity and people to people ties.
Business meetings with Indian companies are likewise on the agenda as the Philippines seeks potential investments in infrastructure, digitalization, information technology, pharmaceuticals, transportation and logistics.
From regional diplomacy to investment opportunities, Marcos’ visit to India places the Philippines at another major international table, where the country hopes to turn dialogue into stronger partnerships and ASEAN priorities into a voice heard far beyond Southeast Asia.
