MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos planning a trip to Vietnam are being advised to secure travel insurance and take extra care with food and drinking water amid reported food poisoning outbreaks in the country.

In an advisory issued on Sept. 8, the Philippine Embassy in Hanoi said travel insurance can help cover medical expenses and other emergencies that may arise during a trip.

The reminder comes as Vietnam continues to record food poisoning incidents.

Data from Vietnam’s Ministry of Health cited by the embassy showed that 58 food poisoning outbreaks were recorded in the first half of 2026, affecting 1,573 people and resulting in 10 deaths.

In 2025, Vietnam recorded 84 outbreaks, with 2,301 people affected and 16 deaths.

The embassy advised Filipino tourists and residents to eat only at reputable hotels and restaurants and to drink bottled water while in Vietnam.

Travelers should also check what their insurance actually covers before leaving the Philippines. Medical treatment abroad can involve significant out-of-pocket expenses, and some facilities may require payment or proof of insurance before treatment.

The advisory does not amount to a warning against travel to Vietnam. Current foreign travel guidance continues to classify Vietnam as generally safe for travelers exercising normal precautions, although visitors are advised to remain alert to health, safety and petty crime risks.

For Filipinos already in Vietnam, the embassy recommends staying alert to food hygiene, choosing established dining establishments and avoiding questionable food or water sources.

In case of a medical emergency, Filipinos may contact the Philippine Embassy in Hanoi at +84 904 126 164 through SMS, WhatsApp, Viber or Zalo, or through hanoipe.atn@dfa.gov.ph.

With Vietnam remaining a popular destination for Filipino travelers, the embassy’s advice is straightforward: prepare for emergencies before departure and be careful about where and what you eat while traveling.
