MANILA, Philippines — The Court of Appeals has ordered the freezing of 55 bank accounts and four insurance policies linked to an unnamed lawmaker associated with government projects worth billions of pesos.

The Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) said the order also covers assets of a construction company linked to the legislator and other associated individuals.

The Court of Appeals issued the freeze order on August 25 after finding probable cause that the assets were linked to possible violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

The case came from investigations by the Office of the Ombudsman and the Bureau of Internal Revenue, as well as a separate administrative inquiry by the House of Representatives.

According to the AMLC, the lawmaker claimed that he had already given up his interest in the construction business before entering public office.

However, records showed that he continued to receive proceeds from the business while serving in government. The AMLC said this indicated that he continued to exercise control over the construction companies.

The AMLC did not identify the lawmaker, the construction company or the other individuals covered by the order.

It also did not disclose the total value of the frozen assets.

A freeze order temporarily prevents the covered assets from being withdrawn, transferred or disposed of while authorities continue their investigation. It does not mean that the assets have already been permanently forfeited.
