Philippines — The Department of National Defense (DND) reaffirmed the Philippines’ alliance with the United States as the two countries marked the 75th anniversary of their Mutual Defense Treaty on Sunday, August 30.

Signed in 1951, the treaty provides the foundation of the longstanding defense partnership between Manila and Washington. It has since been reinforced by agreements such as the Visiting Forces Agreement and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.

The DND described the treaty as a cornerstone of both countries’ commitment to peace, stability and the defense of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

It said the alliance has expanded through bilateral and multilateral military exercises, operational coordination, capability development, maritime security cooperation and humanitarian assistance and disaster response.

According to the department, these activities have improved interoperability, strengthened deterrence and demonstrated the two countries’ commitment to regional security.

The alliance has gained greater significance amid continuing tensions in the South China Sea and the Philippines’ efforts to modernize its armed forces and strengthen its external defense capabilities.

The DND said Manila and Washington would continue building a sustainable and responsive partnership based on mutual respect, shared interests and international law.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines separately reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the alliance and improving its defense capabilities and interoperability with the US.

The AFP said continued cooperation would help promote a free, open, peaceful and secure Indo-Pacific.
