PHILIPPINES – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned communities near Mount Pinatubo and Taal Volcano to prepare for possible lahar and muddy debris flows as heavy southwest monsoon rains continue.

Phivolcs said prolonged and intense rainfall could remobilize loose volcanic deposits left from previous eruptions, triggering muddy streamflows, runoff and volcanic debris flows even without an eruption.

For Pinatubo, lahar flows could affect river systems in Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga, potentially reaching communities in San Marcelino, San Narciso, San Felipe and Botolan.

Around Taal Volcano, heavy rains could trigger muddy and debris flows along slopes west and north of Taal Lake, particularly affecting Agoncillo, Laurel and Talisay in Batangas.

Phivolcs urged local governments and residents in vulnerable areas to closely monitor weather conditions and take preemptive measures.

The danger may not come from an eruption but from rain turning old volcanic deposits into rivers of mud and debris.
