91-year-old wins rent battle after 56% increase threatens affordable housing

CANADA —A 91-year-old Windsor senior has won a legal battle to remain in her home after her rent was proposed to jump by 56 percent, from $447 to $700 a month.
The dispute involves the I.L. Peretz House, a nonprofit housing complex for seniors, where other residents have also faced significant rent increases.
The Landlord and Tenant Board rejected the proposed increase for the senior, providing relief to residents living on fixed incomes who could struggle to absorb sudden housing costs.
The landlord’s group plans to appeal, arguing that higher rents are necessary to address rising operating costs and financial losses.
For seniors facing similar increases, the case goes beyond monthly rent it is about whether they can afford to remain in the homes where they have built their lives.
