A Giant Tiger store along Pembina Highway in Winnipeg is set to close in February 2027, leaving shoppers concerned about losing an affordable option for groceries and household essentials.
The upcoming closure is among several Giant Tiger shutdowns reported in Manitoba, including locations in downtown Winnipeg and The Pas. The development adds to concerns among residents who rely on discount retailers to manage rising living costs.
For regular customer Rob Reimer, the closure could mean paying significantly more for everyday items and travelling farther to shop. He estimated that comparable products at other stores could cost 20 to 30 per cent more.
Other shoppers also expressed frustration, pointing to the store’s popularity and the role it plays in providing lower-cost goods to nearby communities.
The Pembina Highway location follows the closure of two other Giant Tiger stores in Winnipeg about two years ago, further reducing shopping options for residents in parts of the city.
The closures come as households across Canada continue to look for ways to stretch their budgets amid concerns about the cost of food and other necessities. Discount retailers can be particularly important for people who have limited transportation options or live far from larger grocery stores.
Giant Tiger had not responded to CBC News’ request for comment before the report was published.
The planned shutdown raises questions about where local shoppers will turn for affordable groceries and household products once the store closes.
