As impeachment rules tighten, Sara Duterte prosecution team faces possible shake-up

PHILIPPINE S —The House prosecution team in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte could undergo changes following Senate Presiding Officer Francis Escudero’s ruling on the sub judice rule, according to Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong.
Adiong said adjustments within the prosecution panel may be considered after Escudero cautioned lawyers and parties against publicly discussing matters covered by the rule outside the Senate impeachment court.
The ruling adds another layer of pressure on the prosecution as it continues presenting its case against Duterte, who faces allegations involving confidential funds, threats, bribery and unexplained wealth.
The sub judice rule is intended to prevent public statements from influencing or prejudicing ongoing proceedings.
With the Senate enforcing tighter restrictions on what can be discussed outside the courtroom, the prosecution team may now have to rethink not only its arguments, but also how and who delivers them.
