PH women’s baseball team beats Great Britain for second straight World Cup win

The Philippine women’s national baseball team defeated Great Britain, 6-2, for its second straight victory in its historic debut at the 2026 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Group Stage in Tainan, Taiwan.

The World No. 21 Filipinas followed up their 6-0 shutout of World No. 7 Cuba with another strong performance against No. 15 Great Britain on Aug. 26.

The Philippines jumped to an early 4-0 lead against Great Britain in the first inning, with Veronica Velasco and Martine Dominique Francisco delivering key hits. Francisco drove in two runs with a double, while Ivymhel Capistrano and Shyla Mae Celis added RBI doubles.

Great Britain managed to cut into the lead, but the Filipinas held on for the 6-2 victory, improving to 2-1 at that point in the tournament.

The back-to-back wins marked a breakthrough for the Philippines in its first appearance at the Women’s Baseball World Cup. The team opened its campaign with a 3-0 loss to defending champion and World No. 1 Japan before earning its first-ever World Cup victory against Cuba.

The Filipinas’ winning run ended on Aug. 27 after an 8-2 loss to host Chinese Taipei, followed by a 10-0 defeat to Venezuela. They finished the group stage with a 2-3 record and fell short of advancing to the 2027 World Cup Final Stage.

Despite missing qualification, the Philippines capped its maiden World Cup campaign with historic victories over Cuba and Great Britain.
