Canadians react as US-Canada trade talks collapse

Canadians expressed support for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to suspend trade negotiations with the United States following another breakdown in talks between the two countries.

The reaction came after Carney recalled Canadian negotiators, saying the United States had made unreasonable demands at the last minute despite the two sides previously reaching a tentative framework.

The United States has imposed 50 percent tariffs on a wide range of Canadian goods, affecting about C$28 billion worth of exports. Canada, meanwhile, plans to match the US tariffs dollar-for-dollar by September 8.

The latest measures have raised concerns over their potential impact on businesses, consumers and jobs across Canada, particularly in Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec.

Agriculture, textiles, electronics, furniture and plastics manufacturing are among the industries expected to be affected by the tariffs.

The trade dispute has also prompted visible reactions from Canadians, including soccer fans who booed the US national anthem during Major League Soccer matches in Vancouver and Montreal over the weekend.
