PHILIPPINES – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) will launch a nationwide crackdown on unauthorized and improvised license plates beginning September 1, as authorities intensify efforts to ensure that all vehicles on the road display legitimate and properly issued plates.
Under the LTO’s policy, motorists who use improvised plates without the agency’s authorization may face a ₱5,000 fine, along with the impounding of their vehicles. The agency said the enforcement will target motorists who use plates that are not compliant with existing regulations or those that imitate official government-issued license plates.
Motorists who have lost their original license plates are required to secure an affidavit of loss and obtain authorization from the LTO before they can use an improvised plate. The agency stressed that simply creating or purchasing a replacement plate without prior authorization does not make its use legal.
The LTO also warned online sellers and manufacturers against producing unauthorized plates that closely resemble official license plates. Authorities said such plates could make it difficult to identify vehicles and may potentially be used to conceal the identities of vehicles involved in criminal or other unlawful activities.
The crackdown is part of the LTO’s efforts to strengthen vehicle identification and improve road enforcement. The agency urged motorists to comply with the rules and secure the proper documentation to avoid penalties and possible vehicle impoundment.
