Air Canada cuts service on Eight U.S. Routes as cross-border demand softens

Air Canada is scaling back its U.S. network once again, cancelling, delaying, or removing eight transborder routes as high jet fuel costs and weaker demand for cross-border travel continue to squeeze the airline’s bottom line.

The changes, which take effect this fall, will affect flights out of Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec City, touching both business and leisure travellers as the airline moves into its Winter 2026 schedule.

Three routes connecting Canada to the U.S. Midwest will be suspended for the second winter in a row. Air Canada will end its Montreal–Detroit, Montreal–Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Toronto–Indianapolis flights on October 24, cutting them short instead of running them daily through the winter as originally planned.

Three seasonal routes to Florida will still launch this year, just later than expected. Flights from Ottawa to Fort Lauderdale, Montreal to Palm Beach, and Quebec City to Orlando will now begin in December instead of October.

Industry watchers say the delay points to continued confidence in winter leisure travel, with Air Canada choosing to concentrate its capacity around the busiest snowbird and holiday travel weeks rather than spreading it out earlier in the season.

Air Canada has also confirmed that its Toronto–New York JFK and Montreal–New York JFK routes will not return this winter. Both had already been suspended since June, and the airline has now removed them from its schedule entirely. Air Canada continues to serve the New York area through flights to LaGuardia and Newark.

Airlines routinely adjust their schedules based on booking trends, aircraft availability, staffing, and overall network performance. This latest round of cuts follows a broader pattern across Canadian carriers, with Air Canada, WestJet, and Air Transat all trimming U.S. capacity earlier this year after jet fuel prices spiked amid the war in Iran.

Air Canada spokesperson Angela Mah said the airline regularly reviews its schedule to keep capacity aligned with customer demand and seasonal travel patterns, adding that the carrier still intends to return to JFK at some point.

The move reflects a wider trend among Canadian carriers to become more selective with U.S. capacity as cross-border travel patterns shift. Rather than expanding the network, Air Canada appears to be prioritizing efficiency, shifting resources toward stronger-performing markets and away from routes with softer demand.

For now, travellers hoping to fly Air Canada to Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Indianapolis, or New York JFK this winter will need to look at alternative routings or carriers.
