Pagsasama empowers Filipino-Canadian artists

CANADA – Filipino-Canadian Dante Paolo created Pagsasama, a cultural program in Toronto that supports young Filipino Canadians reconnect with their heritage through arts and music.

Motivated by his experiences growing up feeling detached from his identity and a recent voyage back to the Philippines, Paolo founded the initiative to foster a sense of belonging and pride.

Originally established as a music jam at York University, Pagsasama has developed into an initiative helping emerging Filipino artists while addressing barriers such as constrained opportunities and financial issues.

According to Paolo on social media, the concept of Pagsasama, transcends geographic boundaries and time zones, with the diverse experiences of identity among Filipino Canadians forming “a unique mosaic” that “must be unapologetically celebrated.”

Paolo said he hopes the program will continue nurturing creatives and reminding Filipino Canadians that their identity is defined not by language or background, but by embracing their heritage.
