DETROIT – Traffic is scheduled to begin moving Monday across the new Gordie Howe International Bridge, designed to enhance trade, employment, and tourism between the United States and Canada.
The project reached its conclusion last week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Windsor, Ontario, celebrating the end of a multibillion-dollar, multiyear construction effort.
However, the festive atmosphere was marred by political tension after President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, leading to the exclusion of U.S. and Michigan officials from the event.
The bridge honors Gordie Howe, a beloved Canadian hockey legend known as “Mr. Hockey,” who played for the Detroit Red Wings and passed away in 2016.
This new infrastructure is strategically important given that over 70% of Canada’s exports head to the U.S., with Detroit serving as the top truck port on the border.
For nearly a century, the privately owned Ambassador Bridge was the sole route for large commercial trucks in the region, but businesses anticipate the new six-lane span will offer a faster and more cost-effective alternative.
Physically, the massive structure stretches 1.5 miles in length and towers 151 feet above the Detroit River at its highest point. Construction started in 2018 and it faced significant delays due to the global slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
