MANILA – The City of Manila has been placed under a state of calamity due to widespread flooding caused by weather disturbances.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso reported receiving the approved resolution of the City Council putting Manila under a state of calamity.
On Tuesday, Domagoso wrote the City Council, requesting it to hold an emergency session to tackle his recommendation to declare a state of calamity to accelerate the allocation of funds and assistance to affected residents.
Earlier, the city government reported that it has rescued about 800 families, or nearly 3,000 individuals, from massive floods across the city’s six districts. They are now temporarily staying in several evacuation centers around the capital city.
Meanwhile, the municipality of Cainta in Rizal province has also been placed under a state of calamity due to the ongoing effects of inclement weather.
The declaration was made after the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and the Sangguniang Panlungsod (City Council) led by Mayor Kit Nieto convened earlier on Wednesday.
