‘Orphan Black,’ ‘Mommy’ seek top film, TV prizes at Canadian Screen Awards
TORONTO—The sci-fi clone saga “Orphan Black” and Xavier Dolan’s acclaimed film “Mommy” head into tonight’s Canadian Screen Awards seeking more hardware to add to their already impressive hauls.
The Space series “Orphan Black” is up for best TV drama and best TV drama actress for star Tatiana Maslany after already having collected eight trophies at a previous non-televised gala.
And Dolan’s “Mommy” will compete in the top film categories including best film, best director and best screenplay after claiming the best foreign film title at France’s Cesar Awards and the prestigious Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
Comedy star Andrea Martin will host the bash, which celebrates the best in film, television and digital media.
It airs on CBC-TV.
“Orphan Black” and “Mommy” lead the nominees with 13 apiece.
Other big contenders include David Cronenberg’s dark comic film “Maps to the Stars,” with 11 nominations, including a best actress nomination for U.S. star Julianne Moore.
Fresh off her Oscar win for “Still Alice,” Moore is expected to be among the presenters at tonight’s televised bash.
Homegrown celebs handing out hardware include Maslany, Bruce Greenwood, Eugene Levy and Kiefer Sutherland.
“Maps to the Stars” faces off against “Mommy” in the best film category, along with “Cast No Shadow,” “Fall,” “In Her Place,” and “Tu dors Nicole.”
Maslany seeks her second best actress trophy for her turn as several cloned characters on the smash Space serial. Meanwhile, “Orphan Black” competes for best dramatic series against Bravo’s “19-2,” Showcase’s “Continuum,” CTV’s “Motive,” and Global’s “Remedy.”
The best comedy race pits CBC-TV’s “Mr. D” against TMN/Movie Central’s “Call Me Fitz,” City’s “Seed,” CTV’s “Spun Out,” and Super Channel’s “Tiny Plastic Men.”
