Pinay cancer patient accepts award from Queen Elizabeth II

Doreen Jaen-Mooney, a Filipina who has been rendering hands-on service to Birmingham residents, was recognized by British monarch Queen Elizabeth II of England.

Jaen-Mooney was among those granted the rank of Member under the Order of the British Empire, a recognition given to persons with “significant achievement or outstanding service to the community.

”

Despite battling with breast cancer, Jaen-Mooney has continuously volunteered in a community group that helps the unemployed by befriending them and assisting them in finding trainings and job opportunities.

Aside from the community group, she has also opened the doors of her house to care for disabled persons.

“I am so grateful and honored to be given such award. Never in my dreams that I would be given such honors!

What a humbling experience, indeed,” she said in an interview. “Winning this is hugely important as it demonstrates that one doesn’t have to be rich to be generous. One doesn’t [have] to be healthy to offer comfort and smile.”

Jaen-Mooney is presently based in New Heights, Kingstanding in Birmingham, England. She is originally from Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, Philippines.
