PBBM pays tribute to ex-senator Biazon
MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has mourned the death of former senator Rodolfo Biazon who succumbed to pneumonia on Monday morning.
In a Twitter post on Tuesday, Marcos honored Biazon for serving the country as a former military chief and a lawmaker.
“I join the entire nation in expressing my deepest condolences to the bereaved family of former Senator Rodolfo ‘Pong’ Biazon,” Marcos said. “We mourn the loss of a distinguished public servant, a former Armed Forces chief and legislator who dedicated his life to serving the country and the Filipino people.”
Biazon, he said, would be remembered for his exemplary public service, as well as for standing his ground.
“During his many years of government service, Senator Biazon distinguished himself among his peers by his brand of leadership and statesmanship, both as a military man and as a veteran lawmaker. He was highly respected by his colleagues and by the public for being opinionated, conscientious, and virtuous as he fought for his mission and advocacies,” he said.
The President extended his condolences to the family of Biazon.
He also prayed for the eternal repose of Biazon’s soul.
“The thoughts and prayers of a grateful nation are with his family as we remember his remarkable service to the nation,” he said. “On behalf of the loving Filipinos, we pay our respect, honor the memory, and pray for the eternal repose of the soul of former Senator Pong Biazon.”
Biazon was diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2022.
This year, he caught pneumonia twice, the second more serious than the first, which had further weakened his lungs.
He was born on April 14, 1935, in Batac, Ilocos Norte.
Biazon, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1961, served as the 21st chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) from Jan. 24 to April 12 in 1991 under the administration of the late President Corazon Aquino.
He also served as AFP vice chief of staff from 1990 to 1991, Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) commandant from 1987 to 1989, and PMA superintendent from 1986 to 1987.
He was the first PMC member to be appointed as AFP chief.
Biazon also served as senator from June 30, 1992 to June 30, 1995 and from June 30, 1998 to June 30, 2010, and as Muntinlupa representative from June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2016.
