MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with his counterparts from South Korea and Cambodia on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders’ Summit next week, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Friday.
The 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Phnom Penh in Cambodia will be held from November 8 to 13.
Neal Imperial, DFA Assistant Secretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs, said Marcos’ meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen would be the first as the host government and the current ASEAN chair.
Talks between Marcos and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, on the other hand, would cover cooperation on various areas as well as the recently concluded Philippine-Korea Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
“As you know, the Republic of Korea is a key partner of the Philippines economically, in terms of defense and security, and also in terms of tourism,” Imperial said.
“We have a very multifaceted relationship with the Republic of Korea so it’s very important that we discuss current and pending issues between our two countries and the opportunities that we can pursue together with Korea,” he added.
There are no details yet about other leaders whom Marcos would meet, but Imperial said “there will be more than two bilateral meetings being scheduled.”
The DFA confirmed Marcos will be accompanied by the secretaries of the Departments of Foreign Affairs, Social Welfare and Development, and Trade and Industry.
Khmer Times reported that more than 10,000 security forces will be deployed to maintain security and safety, according to Lt. Gen. Chhay Kim Khoeun, deputy commissioner general and spokesperson for the national police.
