MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang said yesterday that on account of Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) President Benigno Aquino III has opted to cancel his trip to South Korea. The president chose to forgo the trip, scheduled for this week, in order to keep watch of the situation in areas affected by the strong typhoon.

Aquino was slated to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) Republic of Korea (ROK) commemorative summit from December 11-12.

In a statement, the Palace said: “Please be advised that due to Typhoon Ruby, the President has decided to cancel his participation in the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit in Busan, South Korea this December.”

Palace official told reporters from the STAR, however, that Secretary to the Cabinet Jose Rene Almendras and Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima will be sent in Aquino’s stead.

Aquino was poised to address the group in line with the theme “Building Trust, Bringing Happiness.” He was likewise supposed to meet with South Korean President Park Geun-hye on December 11.
