2 fatalities in Iloilo due to onslaught of Typhoon ‘Ruby’ — NDRRMC

MANILA — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Sunday reported that two casualties including a one-year old girl in the province of Iloilo due to the onslaught of Typhoon “Ruby”.

According to the NDRRMC, the fatalities identified as The Rojo, 1, a resident of Barangay Balasan, Iloilo; and Ernesto Baylon, 40, of Barangay Bayas, Estancia, Iloilo. Both died Saturday due to hypothermia.

NDRRMC said that some 195,537 families or 902,321 persons were affected in Regions 4-A (Calabarzon), 4-B (Mimaropa), 5 (Bicol Region, 6 (Western Visayas), 7 (Central Visayas), 8 (Eastern Visayas) and Caraga.

Around 2, 225 passengers, 90 rolling cargoes, 786 vessels and four motor boats were also stranded in various ports of the country while 183 domestic flights have been cancelled due to typhoon “Ruby”.

Airports are still closed in Naga City, Camarines Sur; Legazpi in Albay; Masbate City; Tacloban in Leyte; and Calbayog in Samar.

NDRRMC also said that a total of nine roads were closed to traffic due flooding, landslide and falling trees in Regions 5 and 8; while three road sections are not passable to light vehicles in Leyte due to flooding; and seven road sections (five in Region 5 and two in Region 8) are hardly passable to traffic due flooding, landslides, uprooted trees and toppled electric posts.

Another road in Quezon (4-A) and six in Samar Region were also reported not passable.

The total cost of government assistance for the affected families in Regions 5, 6, 7 and Caraga has reached Php12,240,376.98.

The agency said that power outages were reported in 11 provinces of Regions 4-A, 5, 6 and 8, while Globe and Smart networks are currently down in some parts of Leyte and Eastern Samar.

NDRRMC also said that due to the effects of typhoon “Ruby”, classes on Monday (Dec. 8) were suspended in some areas of Regions 4-A, 4-B, 5 7 and the National Capital Region.
