MANILA — The Quezon City government is set to give tax relief to local artists and producers by reducing by three percent the present tax rate for local musical concerts, theatrical plays, fashion shows and other live performances.

Councilor Eufemio Lagumbay has authored Ordinance No. SP 2348 S2014 that amends item II Section 39 Article 15 on the amusement activities of the Quezon City Revenue Code, reducing the tax rate from eight percent (8 percent ) to five percent (5 percent).

As an incentive to local producers and performers, the ordinance which was signed last November 4 by Mayor Herbert M. Bautista, aims to encourage the entertainment industry to come up with more productions and performances by local artists.

Lagumbay noted that local productions nowadays are far low in attendance compared to foreign productions due to popularity and market strategy by international companies.

He said that it is high time that the city government supported and helped local artists and local productions in reviving the local entertainment industry. Giving them some tax relief would surely help them to compete with international artists and productions, he added.

The councilor said that the country has a lot of potential and good artists that have better talent in singing, dancing and other performing arts compared to international artists who visit the Philippines for performance.

Filipinos, he added, are known in other countries because of their talents. Among them are Lea Salonga, Charisse Pempengco and other singers.
