UP to host international conference on K to 12

MANILA — Gearing up for the full implementation of K to 12 curriculum by 2016, the Filipino Departments of the University of the Philippines-Diliman, De La Salle University, University of Santo Tomas, will be holding an international conference-workshop at the UP Diliman University Theater next month.

The international conference-workshop entitled, “Mother-Tongue and National Language in the K to 12 Curricular Enhancement as Framework for Development,” is in partnership with the Guro Formation Forum and supported by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

Scheduled on November 20 to 22, the conference is anchored on the theme, “Language, Culture, Multiculturalism, Multilingual Education and the K+12 Curriculum: Trends, Issues, Challenges, Practices.”

The event aims to gather those teaching Filipino language and other regional languages within and outside the country.

Topics to be discussed are the following: National Language, Multilingualism/Multiculturalism, Multilingual Education, Mother Tongue Based and Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE), and K to 12 curriculum.

Education stakeholders, media, non-government organizations, cultural workers, language researchers, scholars and students are encouraged to attend the event.

The keynote speaker will be UNESCO Director for Asia and the Pacific Dr. Gwang Jo Kim. Language scholars from other countries such as Dr. Alan Williams (University of Melbourne), Dr. Luo Xuanmin (Tsinghua University), Dr. Masano Oue (Osaka University), Dr. Elena Frolova (Moscow State University), Dr. Elizabeth Luquin (INALCO, France), and Dr. Hyunsik Min (Director of the National Language Institute of South Korea) will also share their insights in the forthcoming international event.

Meanwhile, Filipino language scholars gracing the event include Dr. Dina S. Ocampo (Usec, DepEd), Rep. Antonio L. Tino (ACT Teachers Partylist), Dr. Pamela C. Constantino (UP Diliman), Prof. Tereso Tullao, Jr. (DLSU), among others.
