Mayon Volcano on alert level 3, may erupt soon
MANILA — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that the Mayon Volcano is currently on alert level 3 because of “noticeable escalation of unrest.”
The bulletin, released by Phivolcs at 10:00 pm on Monday, said that the magma is at the volcano’s crater. Moreover, the volcano is showing signs of high unrest.
The agency warned that eruption may be possible within weeks.
On Tuesday, Phivolcs said that it already recorded 32 volcanic earthquakes and 72 rock fall events in a span of 24 hours.
An intensity III (bright) crater glow was also seen. Sulfur dioxide flux was also at an average of 611 tonnes per day on September 2.
“All the above data indicate that the volcano is exhibiting relatively high unrest due to the movement of potentially eruptible magma,” said Phivolcs.
With this, the agency already recommended the implementation of the six-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone around Mayon Volcano, and the seven-kilometer Extended Danger Zone on the southeastern flank due to landslides, rockfalls, and sudden explosions.
