Lav Diaz wins Prince Claus Awards
MANILA — Lav Diaz, Filipino filmmaker, is one of the 11 awardees of the Prince Claus Awards this year.
He is recognized for his achievements in the field of culture and development. The Prince Claus Fund is based in the Netherlands and is considered to be a “worldwide platform for cultural exchange.”
Some of this year’s honorees came from various countries which include Chile, Guatemala, Indonesia, Nigeria, Turkey, Vietnam, Brazil, India, and Peru. The main awardee is a community elder from Colombia named Abel Rodriguez.
According to Diaz, the honor he received was unexpected. He came fresh from another awarding ceremony at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland where his work titled “Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon,” won the Golden Leopard for Best Picture in August.
Diaz dedicated his latest recognition to his mother. He also bagged a cash prize of 25,000 euros (P1,417,912).
The awarding ceremony will be held at the Royal Palace Amsterdam in the presence of the royal family on December 10.
