Today, during Remembrance Day commemorations, the Honourable J. Michel Doyen, Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, and Jean Robert, the President of the National Battlefields Commission (NBC), inaugurated the First World War Memorial Site on the Plains of Abraham behind the Armoury.

Quick facts

  • The NBC partnered with the Voltigeurs de Québec regiment in completing the First World War Memorial Site where seven German guns captured by the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the war are on display.
  • The ceremony took place in the presence of regiments that commemorate the memory of the battalions that captured the guns, namely the Royal 22e Régiment, the Canadian Grenadier Guards, the Royal Highland Regiment of Canada, the Voltigeurs de Québec and the Royal Canadian Legion.
  • The site has nine information panels presenting the historical context (Memories of War and Canada at the Front) and a description of each piece of artillery.
  • The seven guns were taken during the great victories at Vimy Ridge in 1917 and Amiens, Arras and Cambrai in 1918. They bear witness to the efforts and sacrifices of all those who joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.
  • In 1926, the War Trophy Commission appealed to the NBC to preserve and showcase the seven pieces of artillery taken from the German Army during the First World War. The guns were installed in different locations on the Plains of Abraham.
