280,000 Meralco customers still awaiting restoration of power
MANILA – Five days after Typhoon Glenda (international code name Rammasun) churned through the province of Luzon, approximately 280,000 Meralco customers are still without power.
According to Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga, over 13,000 of these homes are in the Metro Manila area.
Zaldarriaga added that some areas will still be affected by rotating brownouts between the hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., as the electric company continues its efforts to restore powe4r to all affected areas.
Typhoon Glenda (Rammasun) was the strongest storm so far to hit the country this year.
Based on some reports, the death toll from the storm is now up to 38 people, with about half a million more displaced in Glenda’s aftermath.
The typhoon unleashed its fury across the Philippines on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, with maximum sustained winds of 150 kph near the center and gusts of up to 185 kph.
The strong and swift typhoon brought the country’s business district to a grinding halt, shut down power throughout the island of Luzon, uprooted trees, and inflicted damage on everything in its path.
