PSL nominated as one of Asia’s best games
The Philippine Superliga (PSL) is one of the official finalists for Best Women’s Sports Event (Team or Individual) at the Sports Industry Awards (SPIA) Asia 2018.
Superliga is the only Philippine nomination for the event, which is considered as the “Oscar Awards of Sports in Asia.” The PSL held a press conference on Thursday, October 18, to announce the news. PSL chairman Philip Ella Juico expressed her excitement about the nomination, stating, “This is the first time in the history of Philippine sports and Philippine volleyball that the PSL was named finalist in this category.”
She said that it is “a distinction for the team,” elaborating, “We’re proud of it because it validates and strengthens our honest hard work and sincere advocacy and it inspires us to face the challenges in front of us.” According to the Juico, this is “the first time an organization from the Philippines has been nominated in the category.”
Also on the nomination list vying for the award include Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup from Jordan, AFC Women’s Futsal Championship from Thailand, Asia Women’s Hockey Champions Trophy in Korea, Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Finals from Singapore, CFC Foundation and UNDP Global Goals Women’s World Cup from Thailand, Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open from UAE, HSBC Women’s World Championship from Singapore, Japan Women’s Sevens from Japan, and Women’s Twenty20 Asia Cup from Malaysia.
The announcement of the winner is happening during the SPIA Industry Awards and Conference at Centralworld, Bangkok, from October 19-20.
The news about Superliga’s nomination welcomes the league’s opening on October 30 at the Filoil Flying V Center and the Collegiate GS. Games kick off on November 3 at Ynares Sports. A total of eight teams are participating, namely: F2 Logistics, Smart Giga Hitters, Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors, Petron Blaze Spikers, Generika Ayala Lifesavers, Cignal HD Spikers, Cocolife Asset Managers, and Foton Tornadoes Blue Energy.
