MANILA — Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana expressed surprise over former Customs commissioner Nicanor Faeldon’s sudden transfer and incarceration at the Pasay City Jail Tuesday.

“His incarceration at Pasay Jail is totally unexpected. I was hoping he would be set free sooner so he can start performing his job,” the DND chief added.

Last Dec. 22, Faeldon was appointed as Office Civil Defense (OCD) deputy director replacing Rodolfo Demosthenes Santillan. The OCD is one of the attached agencies of the DND.

The former Marine captain, resigned from the Bureau of Customs last August following the PHP6.4 billion shabu scandal which was investigated by the Senate.

Faeldon was earlier detained at the Senate for contempt charges in connection with the above-mentioned hearing.

“Since he is in detention in the Pasay City Jail, obviously he can not perform his job. However, he will not be entitled to any salary as well because of the principle of no work no pay. Besides he needs to present a Daily Time Record to get his salary which under the present circumstances he won’t be able to do. But once he is out, I am confident that he will be more than able to do his job at the OCD,” Lorenzana added. (PNA)
