287 private schools get approval for tuition fee hike

MANILA —  Out of almost 345 higher institutions who applied for tuition fee hike, only 287 private tertiary schools excluding those in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao were allowed to increase their tuition fee this school year.

The latest report from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said on its latest report that the number of  higher education institutions (HEIs) is four percent lower compared last year. 

In the National Capital Region alone, 64 HEIs were cleared out of 69 who applied for the hike.

Applied throughout the country, the average tuition increase per unit for this school year is P35.66 or 8.13 percent.

The allowable average increase for other school fees is P141.55 or 7.97 percent.

The average per unit tuition increase in the three largest regions are as follows: NCR, P66.24 (six percent); Region 4A, P51.

04 (7.35 percent); and Region 3, P39.42 (9.3 percent).

Regions  4B (Mimaropa), 2 (Cagayan Valley) and 1 (Ilocos) are among the regions which posted the highest average tuition increase with P55.60 (13.90 percent), P39.41 (13.53 percent) and P37.28 (12.99 percent), respectively.

Meanwhile, CHED added that no colleges and universities in Region 8 (Eastern Visayas), which was hardest-hit by Super Typhoon Yolanda last November, will increase their tuition fee this year.
