SASKATOON— A man accused of fatally stabbing a teenager inside a convenience store in Saskatoon has pleaded guilty.

Walid Adam Mohamed entered a second-degree murder plea in Court of Queen’s Bench on what was to be the first day of his trial.

Mohamed, who is 30, was originally charged with first-degree murder in the death of 18-year-old Mohammed Omar at a Mac’s store in April 2016.

Omar had recently moved to Saskatoon from Winnipeg.

An agreed statement of facts read in court said the two men were inside a vehicle when Omar was first stabbed.

Witnesses saw him escape and enter a convenience store, where Mohamed followed him and stabbed him again.

Court heard Mohamed turned to witnesses during the stabbing and claimed Omar had raped his sister.

“What would you do? He raped my sister,” he said.

Court was also told Mohamed has been diagnosed with a mental illness, but experts have said he was aware of the crime he committed.

A second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for a minimum of 10 years.
