Victor: The role that got Zanjoe an Emmy nomination
Just hours before the big reveal, here is a quick look-back at Zanjoe Marudo and his role that got him an Emmy Award nomination.
In an episode of the longest-running drama anthology in Asia, “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (Remembering), Zanjoe played the role of a father who fought his inner delusions, as he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.
Entitled as “Anino (Shadow)” that aired last October 29 as a Halloween special, unfolded the story of Victor and the horrors that the human mind and the human kind can do.
Zanjoe wore the shoes of Victor, a religious pillar of the house and a person overflowing with generosity. Putting up a small bakery, he attracted two strangers who asked for his help. Victor accepted Aling Maring and her son Ben who is a drug addict under his wing – not knowing their real intentions.
After gaining his trust, the two suddenly leave without a trace, including all their income. This pushes Victor to his lowest, drawing him to gambling and to depression. What made things worse is when he starts seeing shadows and hears voices.
He became violent even to their seven-year-old son, and started digging corpses and buried saint figurines.
His family suffered not only from his episodes but from the discrimination and bullying of the people around them because of his condition.
Zanjoe portrayed the role of a father who was haunted by his own demons but still had the faith of his family as he proved his resolve for his wife and children.
While the episode already received awards, Zanjoe said that it was still beyond his expectations.
“Sobrang laking blessing kasi hindi ko naman pinangarap talaga iyan. Hanggang dito lang muna ‘yung iniisip ko [na awards] sa atin. Hindi ko alam na aabot doon (It is a really big blessing as I did not really dream of it. I was thinking of the awards here. I did not think it would reach elsewhere),” he told ABSCBN.
Zanjoe was nominated for the Best Performance of an Actor in the 45th International Emmy Awards.
The results will be announced on November 20, United States time. Will Zanjoe win the award through Victor? No one can say yet, but for him, win or lose, it is already an honor.
