MANILA – This year’s candidate for Mister World pageant is a former US marine who fought in Iraq for 8 months.

Mister World Philippines 2014 John Spainhour, was chosen along with Mister World Philippines 2014 Sam Ajdani by ALV Productions Head Arnold Vegafria and national license holder Cory Quirino.

Spainhour was specializing in close-quarters combat and marksmanship during his stay in the military.

“My prior job required a lot of discipline, a lot of hard work, a lot of dedication,” he said. “Of course, if you apply that to anything in life, it’s going to benefit you greatly… It actually tested me. Since this competition is going to be military-themed, I hear, it should help give me an advantage,” Spainhour said.

The two candidates, which were both endorsers of Bench, were introduced last Wednesday — just a few weeks away from the completion on June 15 in England.

The competition, a counterpart of Miss World established in 1996, involves extreme sports and challenges which draws athletes as competitors.

And like the Miss World competition, Filipinos are also known to dominate the male pageant. Last 2012, Filipino-British model Andrew Wolff, who was also a member of the Philippine rugby team, won runner-up in the contest.

Asked about feeling pressured on Mister World Philippines 2012’s achievement, Spainhour confidently said he feels no pressure at all.

“I don’t, because I understand that he’s a different person than I am. I’m trying to do my best and I’m competing with myself to do better. It’s not like I’ve got to compare myself to other people.”
