LRT-2 resumes full operations Monday
MANILA — The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) has resumed its full operations from Santolan to Recto starting 4:30 a.m. Monday.
In an advisory posted on its Twitter page, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) said its engineering and maintenance personnel conducted repairs of the power cables, telecommunication and signalling wires that were damaged by a fire incident caused by lightning at Pureza station Saturday night.
The restoration of the system lasted for more than 24 hours due to the complexity of the technical fault, the LRTA said.
The fire incident, which broke out at 9:57 p.m., was caused by a burnt junction box that was hit by lightning during heavy downpour.
LRTA Administrator Reynaldo Berroya has directed the engineering team to conduct a thorough inspection and evaluation of the LRT-2 facilities and equipment to prevent similar incidents.
“I’m thankful that in spite of the heavy damage to our system, nobody is hurt. I also commend our personnel for their cooperation, oneness and commitment they have displayed and show of competence with selfless devotion to public service during the emergency,” Berroya said.
The LRT-2 has started its multi-year rehabilitation and modernization projects aimed at improving the riding experience of commuters.
The rehabilitation and modernization projects focus mainly on improving the overall efficiency of the system, including the rolling stocks, signalling, communication equipment, enhancement of stations/facilities and improvement of customer service, the agency said.
