PHL netter Alcantara triumphs in Thailand
MANILA, Aug. 9— Top seeds Francis Casey Alcantara of the Philippines (in photo) and partner Yuichi Ito of Japan survived their equally-talented rivals on Tuesday in the men’s doubles competition of the USD15,000 PTT-LTAT Academy Men’s Circuit 2 in Nonthaburi.
According to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) website, Alcantara and Ito scored a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Issei Okamura of Japan and Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul of Thailand at the National Tennis Development Centre outdoor hard court to secure a quarterfinal berth.
The Filipino-Japanese tandem’s next opponent will be Japanese pair Renta Tokuda and Jumoei Yamasaki, who rallied past Thai wild cards Chayanon Kaewsuto and Charles Roberts, 4-6, 7-6 (3), [10-2].
Joining Alcantara and Ito in the next round are third seeds Nam Hoang Ly and Thien Nguyen Hoang of Vietnam, who won over Yu Hsiang Chiu of Chinese Taipei and Darren Polkinghourne of Australia, 6-4, 6-4.
Ly and Nguyen Hoang will next play Lorenzo Frigerio of Italy and Sami Reinwein of Germany, who prevailed over Japanese duo Soichiro Moritani and Masato Shiga, 6-4, 4-6, [10-7].
Also advancing were Pruchya Isaro of Thailand and Karunuday Singh of India, and Japanese pair Sora Fukuda and Sho Katayama.
Isaro and Singh eliminated second seeds Justin Barki of India and Kittiphong Wachiramanowong, 6-2, 6-3, to arrange a quarterfinal duel with Tung-Lin Wu and Cheng-Yu Yu of Chinese Taipei, 7-6 (4), 6-4 winners over Thai wild cards Patcharapol Kawin and Jirat Navasirisombong.
Fukuda and Katayama, on the other hand, pulled off a 6-3, 6-4 upset win over fourth seeds Sang-Woo Noh of South Korea and David Agung Susanto of Indonesia.
Fukuda and Katayama will be up against Taiwanese pair Jui-Chen Hung and Wei-De Lin, who defeated Thai wild cards Kerdlaphee siblings Kittirat and Phongsapak, 6-3, 6-7 (2), [10-8].
