President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the growing international recognition of Filipino cuisine through the Michelin Guide could create more opportunities for tourism, employment and local businesses while bringing the country’s culinary heritage to a wider global audience.
Speaking at the Michelin Guide Ceremony for Manila and Environs and Cebu 2027 on October 29 in Pasay City, Marcos said the recognition of Filipino restaurants and chefs could encourage more international visitors to explore the country beyond its traditional tourist destinations.
He noted that Filipino food reflects the country’s identity, traditions and hospitality, citing popular dishes such as adobo, kinilaw and sisig as examples of the Philippines’ diverse culinary heritage.
The President also highlighted establishments that continue to promote local ingredients and regional cooking traditions. These include Morning Sun Eatery in Quezon City, which received a Bib Gourmand distinction for its Ilocano dishes, and Kása Palma, led by Chef Aaron Isip, which earned one Michelin Star.
Marcos said international interest in Filipino cuisine could benefit more than restaurants. Increased demand for local ingredients and regional specialties could also generate livelihood opportunities for farmers, fisherfolk, food producers and micro, small and medium enterprises.
He added that the government would continue supporting infrastructure development, improved air and sea connectivity, and culinary education to help expand the country’s food tourism industry.
The Philippines’ inaugural Michelin Guide edition recognized 108 establishments, including 25 Bib Gourmand awardees and nine Michelin-starred restaurants.
For its 2027 selection, the guide expanded to 127 establishments across Manila, its surrounding areas and Cebu, including 10 Michelin-starred restaurants, 31 Bib Gourmand selections and 86 Michelin-selected establishments.
Marcos said the country aims to strengthen its presence in the international culinary scene while preserving regional food traditions and encouraging the next generation of Filipino chefs to innovate.
He described Filipino cuisine and hospitality as important ambassadors of the country, inviting more international visitors to experience the Philippines through its food.
