Russian authorities have stepped up security measures at a popular museum and park complex in Moscow after the United States warned of a credible threat of a possible terrorist attack that could cause mass casualties.
The US Embassy in Moscow issued the alert on Saturday, October 31, identifying the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve in southern Moscow as a potential target and advising people to avoid the area.
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) subsequently confirmed receiving information from Washington about preparations for a possible attack and said authorities were taking appropriate action.
The warning prompted increased security around the historic palace and park complex, with Russian media reporting restricted access and a temporary closure of the grounds.
The embassy said US officials were coordinating with Russian authorities in responding to the threat. It also advised people to remain alert, avoid crowds and monitor local news for further developments.
The warning specifically concerned October 31. No suspected group or individual was publicly identified as being behind the reported threat.
Security measures heightened at Tsaritsyno
The Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, an 18th-century palace and sprawling park complex, is a popular destination for residents and tourists.
Following the US warning, Russian state media reported that the site had been temporarily closed, with law enforcement personnel restricting access to parts of the area.
Other local reports said visitors were evacuated and police officers were deployed around the complex.
However, accounts of the closure differed. Some museum representatives initially said operations were continuing normally, while other reports described restricted entrances and a closure attributed to technical reasons.
The FSB acknowledged receiving the warning through established communication channels with the United States but did not disclose further details about the suspected plot.
Russian authorities also did not publicly identify a suspect or announce any arrests in connection with the alert.
Warning recalls 2024 Moscow concert hall attack
The security alert comes more than two years after a deadly terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall, a concert venue outside Moscow.
In March 2024, the US Embassy had warned of possible extremist attacks targeting large gatherings in the Russian capital.
Gunmen subsequently attacked Crocus City Hall on March 22, killing more than 140 people and injuring hundreds. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility.
The earlier attack raised questions about intelligence-sharing and the ability of authorities to respond to warnings of planned violence.
The October 31 alert similarly involved information passed from Washington to Moscow, although officials have not established a connection between the two incidents.
As of November 1, there was no confirmed report of an attack at Tsaritsyno linked to the warning. Authorities had not publicly announced whether the reported threat had been neutralized.
